July 2006
I asked my daughter if she wanted some ice cream...
Six year old Daughter: (Dancing and jumping in the air) joyfully exclaimed, "YES!"
I gave her a small bowl of of ice cream.
Daughter: (After swallowing first bite asks) "Mom why do you always ask if I want ice cream? Here's a lesson for you. You never need to ask me if I want ice cream because you already know the answer is YES!"
If only we were so excited to consume all that God offers to us through HIS Word... Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6 Just hurriedly reading the Bible to check it off our to do list is like inhaling a bowlful of ice cream. You miss the pleasure. In one of my graduate classes the professor told us to consume the textbook to make it part of ourselves or we would never comprehend it. We need to consume God's Word we need to chew on it and think about it. I read a powerful little book, Be Still and Know that I am God, that I plan to post on sometime in my Reading Room blog. I shared something useful from the book at Memorize This a couple months ago - check it out. Ever since reading the book, I make an effort to not just quickly read a Scripture passage but to let it sink in deeper. It makes a difference. Give it a try... Hunger and thirst for Jesus...like a child hungers for ice cream, like a starving person hunger for a bowl of rice... Jesus is waiting and ready to fill you and me.

Can we call it "ice cream for the soul"?
Sounds good to me... See I'm addicted to ice cream and have to force myself NOT to eat it. I resisted temptation last night by not buying the tub at the store. If its not here I won't eat it.
So I guess we need to have God's Word all over the place to tempt us :) The only temptation that won't hurt us... Consuming something delicious that won't make our pants too tight :)
When I was in college - I used to decorate index cards and put Scripture verses on them and hang them in the restrooms, in the dressing rooms outside of the showers, all over the place. It was neat - girls would sometimes tell me it was time to change the cards because they had the verse memorized.
One summer when I worked on grounds crew at MVNC I taped index cards to the Massey Ferguson tractor I drove and memorized Scripture and prayed 8 hours a day - it was an amazing time of revival for me! I highly recommend it.
I loved this one, thank you! :)
Howdy,I enjoyed your post today. I believe that God can help us become hungry for His word. I pray that He gives me a thirst and hunger for His word until it becomes first nature. Someday it will be.
Hi Randi - hope you are doing well. I can't access your blog now - its only invited readers?
Hi Julie - yes, pray that for all of us...
morning Robin,
thanks for letting me know!
hope all is well!
Terrific soul food here, Robin. I'm anxious to see some postings from that book "Be Still and Know That I Am God"! That is such a powerful verse to me, and I think I would probably purchase a book with that title if it affects me in the same way the verse does. I'll be looking for your info on it.
What's your favorite ice cream flavor? Mine is Butter Pecan.
Guess what Carol - mine is Butter Pecan too :)
Did you check out the post at Memorize This that I linked to in this post? It has a little from the book, but I will post more on the Reading Room blog eventually.
I hope you have a great day!
Let's have a bowl of Butter Pecan together :)
Jel - oops I almost missed your comment. I hope you have a terrific day also... and when Laura gives me the info I will post. I will also share about the Ethiopia trip that Mark went on when he shares the info as well. The Ethiopia info will probably be after the 27th because that is when the team will share in church.
Carol,
One thing I meant to mention regarding the book Be Still... is that it is set up like a devotional book with 31 entries, so it can be used for a month. I greatly enjoyed using it and wish I owned it because I'd probably read back over it again from time to time.
Great post. Thanks for visiting my WW blog picture today. Did you see the "hug" at the bottom of my Favorite blogs????
Hugs, Ruthie
Thanks Ruthie, I hurried over to your blog to check on the hug - very nice :) Thanks! We can all use a hug - back at you :)
Love this post! As you probably know....being 'still' has been an issue for me lately. I think I will try Lectio Divina (hope I spelled that correctly:).
Thank you for the kind comments you left me. I really do love your blogs! I wish we were neighbors, too. I wish I was neighbors with a lot of you-You, Carol, Papa and Mama, Heidi, Tanya, Susan, Lori-OOPS...got carried away...I am neighbors with Tanya and Susan and I used to be neighbors with Lori:)
Thanks for your Spirit filled blogs. I so enjoy the 'lift' I get from them.
Love and Blessings.......
Thanks Heather :) I thought of you when I mentioned "Be Still..." I think you would enjoy the book too. I will eventually post on it at the Reading Room blog.
Have a great day!
Hi Robin, Just a note....I started my China Childhood Memories stories in my blog. I know you were interested in reading them. I'll add something every so often. Our kids have been after me to get some of these things written down, so this is a good way to start.
Smiles.
Hi, I really love the analogy here. I guess some days I really crave God's Word and other days I crave worldly stuff. I will remember this "ice cream for the soul" thought and use it on days when I crave worldly things. It is my prayer to always hunger and thirst after God and His truth's and promises. Be blessed.
As a side, our family is involved in 3 of the volunteer activities you mention in Do Something that Matters. We cook and serve 45 - 60homeless folks once a month, my husband and son teach a Bible study in a boys prison once a week and we are still very much involved with our "littles" from BB/BS from over 20 years ago(!!). Being the hands and feet of Jesus is way cool.
Ruthie, what a godly heritage your parents passed to you and you are passing to your family and the world! Thank you!
Life Adapted - it is a struggle we all have to face.
Very cool that you family is so involved in volunteer outreach ministries!!! Have you ever read Signs of Life by David Jeremiah or Justice in the Burbs by Will and Lisa Samson? Both great books that discuss service to God by loving our neighbors and fellow man. I've posted about both books at my reading room blog.
Very sweet..so much that God has for us is so readily available..it is just for us to take!
Yes, Mel if only we were so eager for God as we are for whatever we allow to take HIS place...
Good blog, Robin. Just to let you know--I'm going to enter the Christian women's writing contest. Thank you for posting the information on your blog a couple of weeks ago. I've enjoyed writing about my mother and I plan to post the article on my blog on Mother's Day.
QOTW - Glad you are going to enter the contest. When it is over will you be able to share your story with us? Your stories and blogs are always fun to read.
Hi Robin, I checked out the books you mentioned, they both look interesting and I look forward to reading them. . .someday. . .in my spare time. . .I'll add them to the pile growing at my bedside table. . .
Thank you always for your encouragement. Be blessed.
Life Adapted - I too have a pile of library books next to my bed, another on the shelf above my computer desk, and yet another in the bag I carry with me to the gym. I certainly can't be somewhere without reading materials :)
Do you have any must read books you'd like to share about - actually you could share here or at my Reading Room blog too. I'm always looking for books to add to my list :)
Have a terrific week!
Hi Robin, I'll give you my short list for now - btw, your Reading Room is awesome!
The God of All Comfort by Hannah Whitall Smith, The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom (with John & Elizabeth Sherrill), A Call To Die by David Nasser, With Love From a Mother's Heart by Glenda Revell and The Bronze Bow (I'll have to look up the author). I also love historical fiction and illustrated children's books, like Jill Murphy's books about the "Large Family". I wonder if you know all these or if any are new to you? Be blessed.
Life Adapted - Great - thanks for the list - I only know of Corrie ten Boom's book, so the others are new... I'm going to copy this comment into the reading room comments under the care to share post that I'm keeping track of books in - its easier for me to keep it there where I can go back and reference them when I'm needing a new book :)
